Biography

Sheriff David J. Lucero is a 23-year-veteran law enforcement officer starting his career with the Lamar (Colorado) Police Department. Sheriff Lucero came to the Pueblo County Sheriff’s Office in 2004 and has served here as a: 

  • Patrol Deputy 
  • Child Crimes Detective 
  • Major Crimes Detective 
  • Sergeant 
  • Internal Affairs Inspector 
  • Detention Operations Captain 
  • Patrol Captain 
  • Law Enforcement Bureau Chief 
  • Detention Bureau Chief 
  • Undersheriff

On October 18th, 2022, Sheriff Lucero was sworn in as the 38th Sheriff of Pueblo County when the Pueblo Board of County Commissioners appointed him to serve out the remainder of Sheriff Taylor's term.  Sheriff Lucero was elected Sheriff November 8, 2022, and began his first term in Office in January 2023.

Lucero was promoted to Undersheriff by Sheriff Kirk M. Taylor on July 1, 2022.  Undersheriff Lucero has served as Vice President and President of the Colorado Jail Association and as a Technical Resource Provider for the US Department of Justice, National Institute of Corrections. Undersheriff Lucero also serves as a Special Deputy U.S. Marshal assigned to the U.S. Marshals Colorado Violent Offender Task Force. 

Education & Training
Sheriff Lucero is a graduate of Colorado State University-Pueblo, the Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI) Rocky Mountain Command College and the 271st session of the F.B.I. National Academy.  Sheriff Lucero graduated in May of 2022 with his Master of Public Safety from the University of Virginia.  Sheriff Lucero was appointed by Governor Jared Polis to the State’s Peace Office Standards and Training (P.O.S.T.) Board in February, 2023.  The POST Board is made up of lay members, professionals and experts within the law and law enforcement communities. The Board makes decisions on policy and advises POST staff on the day-to-day operation of the unit.
